At Ysgol Y Bryn, we believe that good behaviour is essential for effective teaching and learning. Our Positive Behaviour Policy sets out a clear framework for promoting positive relationships, encouraging self-discipline, and creating a safe, respectful and engaging school environment for all.
We believe that everyone in our school community has the right to learn and work in a place that is:
Safe, friendly, and inclusive
Respectful and fair
Focused on learning and personal growth
Our approach to behaviour is rooted in high expectations, consistent routines, and a strong culture of care, encouragement, and recognition.
Foster a safe, stimulating and happy learning environment
Build positive relationships between pupils, staff and parents
Encourage mutual respect and cooperation
Support children to develop socially, morally, spiritually and emotionally
Use Restorative Practice and a consistent, respectful approach to behaviour management
Celebrate success and reward effort regularly
We believe behaviour is best supported by strong relationships. Staff:
Model positive behaviour at all times
Create caring, fair and inclusive classrooms
Plan engaging and accessible learning experiences
Acknowledge effort, progress and success (however small)
Take time to get to know each child as an individual
Use consistent, calm language and body language
Interact positively with children during lessons and play
Parents and carers play a crucial role in shaping behaviour. We:
Maintain open, regular communication with families
Hold parent consultations and learning events
Invite families to celebrations and assemblies
Use feedback to shape school improvement
Fully involve parents in supporting children with behavioural or additional learning needs
Good behaviour stems from good teaching. We:
Engage pupils with purposeful, active learning
Use clear routines and expectations
Differentiate tasks to ensure accessibility for all
Use school and class rules co-created with pupils:
Be Safe
Show Respect
Promote Positive Relationships

All staff are trained in Restorative Practice. Pupils reflect on:
What happened?
What were you thinking/feeling?
What can we do to make this better?
What would you do differently next time?
This approach builds empathy, accountability, and better future choices.
We use a range of targeted strategies:
Pastoral Support Plans (PSPs)
Individual Risk Assessments
Involvement of external agencies
Use of positive play, ELSA, and well-being interventions
Consistent use of ABC behaviour recording for pattern analysis
Incidents are managed in a stepped approach:
Calm, minimal reprimand
Loss of privilege
Parental involvement and meetings
Use of behaviour data and function analysis
Involvement of LA Behaviour Support, EP, or other services
Fixed-term or permanent exclusion (in line with LA policy)
Serious incidents are logged securely. Exclusions are a last resort.
All staff are trained in Team Teach, emphasising de-escalation and safe handling as a last resort. All restraint is carried out in line with Carmarthenshire County Council guidelines.
