School Meals

At Ysgol Y Bryn, we are delighted to inform our families about the Universal Primary Free School Meals (UPFSM) initiative, which ensures that all primary school pupils in Wales are entitled to free school meals. This programme is part of the Welsh Government's commitment to supporting families and promoting healthy eating among children.

Benefits of Free School Meals:

• Nutritional Value: Our school meals are designed to provide balanced and nutritious options, contributing to your child's overall health and development.

• Time-Saving for Families: With meals provided at school, parents can save time in the mornings without the need to prepare packed lunches.

• Social Development: Shared mealtimes at school encourage social interaction, helping children develop important social skills and table manners.

• Enhanced Concentration: A nutritious meal during the day supports better concentration and learning outcomes in afternoon lessons.
  
  

While all primary pupils automatically receive free school meals, we encourage families who meet certain eligibility criteria to still apply for Free School Meals (FSM). This is important because eligible schools receive additional funding through the Pupil Development Grant (PDG), which can be used to enhance educational provisions. Additionally, families eligible for FSM may access further support, such as the School Essentials Grant, which provides assistance with school uniforms and equipment.

Eligibility for Free School Meals:

Your child may be eligible for FSM if you receive any of the following benefits:

• Income Support

• Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance

• Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

• Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

• Child Tax Credit (provided you are not also receiving Working Tax Credit and have an annual income of £16,190 or less)

• Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)

• Universal Credit with an annual net income of no more than £7,400
