Pupil Development Grant (PDG) 2023/24

The Pupil Development Grant (PDG) is a vital resource provided to schools to support pupils from low-income families who are eligible for free school meals (eFSM) and those who have been in continuous care for over six months (LAC). This funding enables schools to implement sustainable strategies that promote meaningful, positive changes for these pupils, helping to close the attainment gap and enhance their educational experiences.

At Ysgol Y Bryn, we have developed a comprehensive plan to ensure the effective use of our PDG funding. This plan, carefully crafted and regularly reviewed in collaboration with Carmarthenshire Local Authority and our Governors, focuses on improving the educational journey for our eFSM and LAC pupils by addressing the unique challenges they may face.

Our Goals and Approach

The purpose of our PDG plan is to provide tailored support that helps eFSM and LAC pupils overcome barriers to learning and succeed in school. We aim to create inclusive opportunities, enriching experiences, and targeted interventions that address specific needs, enabling all pupils to reach their full potential. Some of the key areas we focus on include:

Academic Support

We provide targeted academic interventions to support pupils in core subjects, ensuring that any gaps in knowledge are identified and addressed. Our approach includes small group sessions, one-to-one support, and access to learning resources that help to build skills and confidence.

Emotional and Wellbeing Support

Recognising the importance of emotional resilience, we offer additional pastoral support to help pupils navigate any challenges they may face. 

Enrichment Opportunities

To broaden horizons and build aspirations, we provide access to enrichment activities that may otherwise be out of reach. These include educational trips, extracurricular clubs, and cultural experiences designed to inspire pupils and give them a broader understanding of the world around them.

Monitoring and Accountability

Our PDG plan is not only designed to meet immediate needs but also to create lasting, positive impacts. Regular reviews by the school’s leadership team, Carmarthenshire Local Authority, and our Governors ensure that the strategies we implement are effective, aligned with our goals, and responsive to changing needs. This commitment to ongoing assessment allows us to continuously refine our approach, providing the best possible support for our eFSM and LAC pupils.
