Module 1
This module we have been using compass points and map symbols in our Geography and PE sessions. We have also investigated what settlements all need and how and why environments channge over time.
N.C. Pupils should be taught : Locational knowledge locate the world’s countries, using maps to focus on Europe, including the location of Russia, use the points of a compass and symbols and key (including the use of Ordnance Survey maps)
In our first esson, we used the four Cardinal points of a compass (NSEW) to help Heracles navigate his way to many of his beastly labours.
In our next session, we used positional language such as above, left, right, next to, between, and opposite to direct our partner to visit as many cones, which had been randomly placed around the hall, within a time limit.
We then used Google Maps to help us identify countries within Europe. We also used positional language to describe where some countries were in relation to others.
Then, we looked at examples of different settlements to identify what they all had in common. We were then able to explain what all settlements; need, would like and do not need. We then used our knowledge to evaluate whether or not an example settlement we were given was suitable or not.
In PE, we were able to use our knowledge of map symbols to complete OAA tasks as a team.
Finally, we looked at ways environments have (and can) change over time and what can cause these changes. We then ascertained which changes were caused by human or natural processes. We demonstrated our findings by creating trioramas.
Module 2
This module we have been using maps and grid references. We have also investigated what similarities and differences there are between the UK and Greece.
N.C. Pupils should be taught : understand geographical similarities and differences through the study of human and physical geography of a region of the United Kingdom, a region in a European country. Use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied, use 4- and 6-figure grid references, symbols and key (including the use of Ordnance Survey maps) to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world
In our first session we studied images and maps of Hoo to understand hoe settlements can change over time. We thought carefully about why these changes happen and the impact they have had on people's lives.
Next, we used the internet to reseach life in the UK and Greece then created comparisons.
Then we revised our knowledge about symbols and their purpose on maps. e then found different symbols on maps using 4 figure grid refereces.
We then identified and compared small and large scale maps and thought about their different purposes.
Finally, we used aerial photographs to identify key features of different areas. We specically looked for human and natural features, patterns and land use.
