Studio Art 2: Oil Pastel Self-Portrait

Classical Proportions

Dark Blue Lines: Find the basic shapes of the head and face.

Light Teal Line: Mark the mid point between the top of the cranium and the jaw. This is your eyeline.

Light Green Lines: Divide the face into 3 equal sections from the hairline to the jawline. These lines mark the Hairline, browline, and nose.

Pink Lines: Divide the bottom third (from the nose to the jaw) into thirds again. The midline of the mouth sits on the top third line, and the chin is on the bottom third.

Yellow Ovals: The face is roughly 5 eyes wide.

Prep Work: Take your reference photo, posterize it to find the value areas, and sketch out the facial proportions.

Part 1: Lay out the mid-range values in your warm color.
