Unit 1: Looking Around: Seeing the World
First grade art students will learn how to observe the world around them and the role it plays in the creation of art.
Students will also learn about the element of art, line through exploration. Students will know and understand concepts relating to outlining, edges of a shape and be able to identify different line types and be able to identify them in the environment around them.
Students will also investigate how line conveys feeling.
Students will be able to identify and use different geometric and organic shapes to communicate in their artwork.

Unit 2: Colorful Stories: Colors & Imagination
First grade art students will make discoveries through explorations with color and value.
Students will be able to use and identify dark and light colors in art as well as apply those skills to their creations.
Students will also build on their knowledge of the color wheel by introducing neutral colors, tints and shades and warm and cool colors.
Unit 3: People & Places: Seeing Details & Actions
First grade art students will investigate how people and places play a role in the creation of art.
Students will experiment with overlapping in space, identifying the horizon line, and working with positive and negative space.
Students will also investigate different 3D forms and how artists create using spheres, cubes, pyramids, cones and cylinders.
Unit 4: Art & Nature: Getting Ideas
First grade students will experiment with actual and implied texture through various activities where they will learn about the element of art.
Students will investigate how nature plays a role in how we create in art.
Unit 5: Special Times: Art to Remember
Students will learn about the process of compiling their artwork for portfolios and how we use portfolios as a reflection tool.
