Unit 1: Picture Stories: Images & Ideas
Second grade art students will create using their knowledge of line while adding to their knowledge using vertical and horizontal lines, diagonal lines, and how lines evoke feeling in the artist and viewer. Students will also reflect on the different organic and geometric shapes used to create pictures that tell stories.

Unit 2: We Belong Together: Expressing Feelings & Mood
Second grade students will investigate how to create tints and shades using value in their artwork. Students will also build upon their knowledge of color by reinforcing their knowledge of primary/secondary, warm/cool, and neutral colors. Students will learn how color and tone are used to express feelings and mood in an artwork.

Unit 3: Nature's Beauty: Looking & Seeing
Students will experiment with texture and use observational skills to make and create art influenced by nature.

Unit 4: Work & Play: Space & Movement
Second grade students will experiment by using different kinds of space in their artwork. Students will learn how to use the principle of design, movement, in their artwork to make their piece come to life.
Tunnel books: students illustrate a story using a tunnel book
Students construct a simple school building to illustrate the different schools they researched earlier in the year (the book they wrote in Q1).
Unit 5: Special Times: Art to Remember
Students will learn about the process of compiling their artwork for portfolios and how we use portfolios as a reflection tool.
Students prepare their artwork for the art show.
Students reflect on their portfolio to see how they grew this year.
