Dinosaurs have always been a topic of interest among many, and none have grabbed our attention more than the Tyrannosaurus Rex, a large theropod that roamed Pangea in the cretaceous era. Massive creatures were the kings of their environments, dominating all other species. We’ve heard of the Triceratops, Velociraptor, and Ankylosaurus, but what about the others? What about Euoplocephalus? What about Carnotaurus? Why have these dinosaurs been pushed to the sidelines?
Among probable reasons for the popularity is the time of discovery of each fossil. The most popular dino, T.Rex, had a discovery date of 1902, while Triceratops was discovered in 1887, which is a much earlier discovery date than lesser-known dinosaurs such as Erlikosaurus, with a discovery date of 1980. This would play a major part in the reasons that these dinosaurs are largely unknown to the public because the dinosaurs with an earlier discovery date would be known about for longer, taught about in schools for longer, and would have been researched for longer periods of time.
Following up with more reason that these dinos are almost completely unheard of is that some of these dinosaurs may be more presentable than others. The aforementioned Carnotaurus would have been less suited for mass public consumption because if you look at an image of a red one, your first thought is probably gonna be “OH MY GOD IT’S A DEVIL LIZARD!”.(Look up an image of Carnotaurus for evidence.) This would have most likely been a set-off for many of the parents of children at schools, and for the church.
The final reason that some dinosaurs are forgotten is the decreasing public interest in dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures in general. Right now in the world, there are much bigger topics than researching and studying dinosaurs. Who cares about some random prehistoric lizards when we’re struggling to fight an ongoing pandemic? Who cares about some random prehistoric lizards with political tensions rising and inflation ruining the economy? And most importantly, who cares about some random prehistoric lizards when I’ve got something better to do? Video games, TV, and other things are taking the place of books in which kids would learn about dinosaurs, and now the only dinosaur education kids are getting is from Ark: Survival Evolved, even though its dinosaurs are more inaccurate than a stormtrooper laser blast.
Dinosaurs have been talked about, taught about, and, for the most part, students enjoyed learning about them. But with more and more popular games and TV shows, dinosaurs are fading out of the media and our memory. The once great dinosaurs are being forgotten, their memory only being dragged along by inaccurate movies and games that only used dinosaurs for money. So, are dinosaurs really still living on in our minds? Or is their memory going extinct?
