Is the school year too long? In New Jersey, there are 180 days of school. Should the school year be shorter, longer, or is it just right?
Out of the nine students surveyed for this story, 4 students think it is too long, 1 student thinks it is too short and 4 people think it is perfect.
“The school year is the perfect size because it provides ample time to learn complex topics and develop relationships with friends while still giving enough time for a break over the summer,” said 8th-grade student Connor Rasulo of Explore Middle School.
Most Explore students think the school year is too long.
According to Explore student Mychael Richardson, “The school year is too long because school sometimes becomes too much for someone and they get tired and they start feeling a certain way and so many other things.”
Most students think the year is too long in comparison to the number of breaks they get. In New Jersey, there are 180 days of school and 2 and half months of summer break.
Explore sixth grader Tallulah Sandler says, “The school year is too long because it’s 5 days a week already and there’s only 2 months in the summer.”
I think students think the year is too long because if you do something for a long time it starts getting repetitive and boring after a while. After a while school feels like something you have to do instead of something that you should do and that will help you later on in life.“I think students think the school year is too long because the school is just cramming random days in the year and some days we don’t do anything and the school board is trying to make us reach the 180 days of school mark,” says Explore student Luke Bridda.
I personally think the school year is just right. It’s not too short and not too long. It’s long enough that you still learn things and still have a good time.
If the school year was any shorter you wouldn’t learn anything, and if you did learn something it wouldn’t stick to you and you would probably forget it. If it was longer students would get really tired of school, would start behaving worse, have shorter tempers, and maybe even not come to school some days. If the school years were longer that means the school would start cutting into the summertime so instead of playing outside, you would be stuck inside the school building.
Overall, it appears that we are stuck with 180 days of school for a while.
