Because of the recent presidential election, many adults were wondering who they would vote for. In more recent terms, some adults wonder what would have happened if they had chosen another candidate. Although middle schoolers cannot vote, they still have their own opinions and thoughts. Here are some of their thoughts.
7th grader Esnar Moquete said, “I want someone who is not bossy and fun. I also want someone who lowers taxes and brings back the Suicide Prevention Line. Another thing is someone who isn’t racist or sexist and treats everyone as equals. Honestly, a chill dude. ”
Another opinion was shared by 6th graders Sophie Peleg and Beatrice Black: “We would like someone who is trustworthy, smart, good at decision-making, and kind. Someone who isn't discriminatory to other people and someone who is not mean.”
Many students agree that a political leader must show respect for all people, regardless of their race, gender, or background. Multiple students pointed out that the ideal leader should not be "racist or sexist" and should treat everyone equally. Similarly, another student (who wished to stay anonymous) advocates for a leader who isn’t “..biased to any group." A good leader must also be able to make smart choices and adapt to new situations. One student pointed out that a leader should maintain a "balance in power" and adjust to new events while keeping promises.
ELA teacher Mr. Kraft also points out that a leader should be unselfish and willing to listen. “I think some good qualities of leaders are that they need to be able to listen to people, and to put the needs of their people above their own,” he said.
When asked if they would vote, many students agreed that voting is important to make sure leaders are fit for their role. 7th grader Annabelle White said she would vote to ensure that leaders are the right people for the job. Some others point out that every leader has flaws and elections should not be biased. Still, some students, such as Peleg and Black, believe voting is a way to make a difference and have their voices heard.
From equal to kind, from smart to trustworthy, Explore students have very diverse and unique opinions on their ideal political leader. If given the chance to vote, some believe they should. This is because they feel that voting is a way to make their voices heard. Some others believe that voting shouldn’t be as biased or sexist. Students also want leaders who listen, make thoughtful decisions, and treat everyone with respect. It’s very clear that Explore students understand the impact, importance and challenges of voting and who they choose.
