PepsiCo launched Simply NKD Cheetos and Doritos. They do not replace the original products, but they do provide a healthier alternative. They are made without any artificial dyes, but they do not change the flavor.
Expert tasters conducted a blind tasting and found no difference in taste. Unlike the original snacks, which have Yellow 5, Yellow 6, and Red 40, Simply NKD has no artificial dyes or flavors. The new version of these iconic snacks has a more pale color.
Many critics are saying that synthetic colors have no nutritional value and pose health risks. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy asked food companies to gradually get rid of synthetic colors by the end of 2026 and completely eliminate them in 2027. Simply NKD is just the beginning.
FDA Commissioner Marty Makary told fda.gov, “Given the epidemic we face of childhood diabetes, obesity, depression, and ADHD, it’s common sense to work together to remove these chemicals as part of our broader effort to work to improve children’s healthy eating patterns.”
Other than PepsiCo, many companies are working to eliminate these artificial ingredients. In-N-Out has already eliminated Red Dye No. 40 from its Strawberry Shakes and Signature Pink Lemonade and replaced it with Beta carotene and vegetable juice, which are natural ingredients that provide a pink color. Another example is Hershey, whose goal is to eliminate any certified colors by 2027 from BROOKSIDE®, Dot's Homestyle Pretzels®, JOLLY RANCHER®, KitKat®, SKINNYPOP®, and Twizzlers®.
PepsiCo’s launch with Simply NKD is just the beginning of the movement to eliminate any artificial ingredients. It signals a difference in the food industry that is striving for healthier alternatives. But will consumers embrace and accept this change?
Some people, like sixth grader Adam Velasquez-Cruz, would stick with the original. He said, “Color makes my monkey brain go yum!”
According to Social Studies teacher John Dunphy, “The color is an important part of Cheetos. If they had a different name, I would buy them. For example, cheesy poop sticks.”
Eighth grader Morgan Ransom actually bought them and said, “I would definitely repurchase them.”
Fellow eighth grader Polina Sobolev adds, “As long as they taste like Cheetos and Doritos, I do not care.”
Principal Amy Lin-Rodriguez said that she would absolutely buy them because they provide a healthier option.
In conclusion, Cheetos and Doritos provide a healthier alternative. A majority of people appreciate and accept it. While others say the originals make their monkey brain go yum!
