On February 2, 2023, the journalism club conducted a press conference with the members of the Student Council and asked questions gathered from students across Explore Middle School about the issues. The issues being discussed included field trips, campaign promises, candy grams, and the playground. These were the results:
The Playground:
Representatives remained hopeful that the playground would be finished before the spring and reminded students that the recent construction of the playground will be completed soon.
Field trips:
Student council members asked students to remember that field trips must be educational and must go through an extensive approval process. The student council also requested that students send in more suggestions, with everything and especially with field trips.
Candy grams:
Most student council members disagree with dissenting opinions about candy grams, but the price for the upcoming Lucky Charms candy grams sales is $1.
8th Grade Issues:
We asked the eighth-grade representatives, Vice President Michelle Ramnath, and President Dmitri Sobolev about the 8th-grade field trip, and the formal, and campaign promises.
The 8th Grade Field Trip:
As for the field trip, representatives stated that the field trip was a compromise between going to the beach or going to a waterpark.
The formal:
The formal: Ramnath, Sobolev, and Sofia Santamauro (8th-grade rep) all said that they could not talk about the 8th-grade formal, however, said that it was run by the administration and that the student council does not plan the formal.
Campaign promises:
Sobolev encouraged students to remember that he has limited power, saying “People need to remember that the president is not all-powerful.”
“We’re trying our best, and we are succeeding,” said 7th-grade representative Alexis Teeters. Many students agree, and we hope that the student council will continue to do this, as well as make good on campaign promises in the future.
