Symbolises the Nation’s sovereignty, pride & honour
The National Flag consists of two equal horizontal sections, of red above white. The upper left section contains a white crescent moon, and five white stars which form a circle.
About the Flag: Red symbolises universal brotherhood and the equality of man, while
white signifies pervading and everlasting purity and virtue. The crescent moon represents a rising young nation. The five stars stand for the nation’s ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.

Reflects the ideals for shaping a united nation
We, the citizens of Singapore,
pledge ourselves as one united people,
regardless of race, language or religion,
to build a democratic society based on justice and equality
so as to achieve happiness, prosperity
and progress for our nation
About the Pledge: Singapore’s national pledge was written by Singapore’s first Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr S. Rajaratnam, in 1966, against the backdrop of racial riots in the 1950s and 1960s. Mr Rajaratnam’s inspiration was to build “a Singapore we are proud of”, while emphasising unity and multiracial harmony. He believed that language, race and religion were potentially divisive factors, which could be overcome if Singaporeans cared enough about their country.
