Gilli Danda is a game very similar to cricket and baseball; its popularity in India once rivalled that of cricket. The game is played with a small piece of wood reduced on both sides known as gilli and a large piece of wood that is used to hit the gilli known as danda. The aim of the game is to hit the gilli as far as possible.

Gilli Danda is a game which is played in the small towns or rural areas of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is played with two kinds of sticks- first is ‘Gilli’, a small stick which is hit by a big stick called ‘Danda’. It is an ancient Indian games nearly around 2500 years ago. It is origin of some games such as cricket, soft ball as well as baseball. Gilli Danda is derived from ‘ghatika’ literally ‘tip-cat’. It is played with two sticks Gilli and Danda in which we have to hit gilli with a danda standing in a small circle. Gilli is put on a stone and is stricked hardly in air making it move fastly.
