Government Initiatives

As we all know that the pollution of our environment is increasing day by day and the government is taking many initiatives to improve the atmosphere of our country . The government has approved an act which is very helpful to the environment and the act is ‘The Environment Protection Act .’ The purpose of the act is to implement the decisions of the UN conference on the human environment . The relate to the protection and improvement of the human environment and the prevention hazards to human beings, other living creatures, plants and property . The areas on which restriction has been imposed by this act include Doon Valley in UP, Arawali regions in Alwar, Rajasthan, Coastal zones and ecological sensitive zones . Environment helps us in many ways and in our day to day life too . Many schemes and programmes are also launched by the Ministry of Environment , which are as follows :

1. National River Conservation Plan

National River Conservation Plan (NRCP) is a centrally funded scheme launched in 1995 aimed at preventing the pollution of rivers . It provoides information about the amount sanctioned to each and every state under NRCP for what purpose .


2. Ecomark Scheme of India (ECOMARK) - Ecomark Labelling

Ecomark is a certification mark issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (the national standards organization of India) to the products conforming to a set of standards aimed at the least impact on the ecosystem . The marking scheme was started in 1991 .


3. National Afforestation Programme: A Participatory Approach to Sustainable Development of Forests

National Afforestation Programme (NAP) launched by the Ministry of Environment of India & Forests is a 100% Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Afforestation and tree plantation and eco-restoration of degraded forests and adjoining areas in the country .


4. National Action Programme to Combat Desertification

India is a party to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and MoEF is the National Coordinating Agency for the implementation of the UNCCD in the country. As an affected party, a 20 years comprehensive National Action Programme (NAP) to combat desertification in the country has been prepared . The objectives are :-

  1. Awareness raising .
  2. Drought management preparedness and mitigation .
  3. R&D initiatives and interventions which are locally suited .
  4. Strengthening self governance leading to empowerment of local communities .
