Culture, by definition, is:
On the Mississippi Coast, we strive to maintain the important traditions of the many cultures of our heritage, while encouraging growth. We have many festivals that celebrate the art, cuisine and traditions of the diverse cultures that make up our population. We also embrace many sports that support teamwork and positive interaction across cultural divides.
Our coastal heritage is a melting pot of cultures. The early settlers in our region were Native American and many of our cities and waterways have Native American names. Our second largest city, Biloxi, is named for a Native American tribe. We are on the Gulf of Mexico and have a seafood industry that attracted people from around the world to migrate here, from early European immigrants to more recent Vietnamese. Additional people were attracted by our military bases and training centers and our National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) complex .Gulfport also has a busy international port on the Gulf of Mexico that brings in people from around the world. More recently, we have become a home to the casino industry which has brought in many more people to work. These people have brought many of their foods and traditions with them, enriching the local culture.
