Extraction and Prediction of Morphological Features of a Splashing Drop on a Solid Surface using Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI)

Splashing has great implications on various implications. To understand the characteristics of a splashing drop, we trained an explainable AI (XAI) to classify splashing and non-splashing drops. After the XAI learnt to classify images of splashing and non-splashing drops accurately, we checked how it performs the classification due to its explainability. As a result, the XAI helped us to discover a difference between splashing and non-splashing drops that have not been reported before, that is the contour of a splashing drop is higher than that of a non-splashing drop. Therefore, by understanding how an AI works, we can use it to observe physical phenomena and find new perspectives from it.

I wanted to deepen my knowledge in my field and I hope one day I can be a professor that can educate the future generation while working on fundamental research.

I am glad that I could meet a good supervisor who is a good educator. He helped me to build my confidence as a researcher and gave me opportunities to join international conferences and give presentations.

In the first few years of my study, I could not get the results that are necessary for publication. As I was about to give up, thanks to the Japanese language teacher of the university, she encouraged me to keep pursuing my dream. So I continued with a different research topic, but in the same field. Finally, I could graduate with a PhD degree. I would not have done it without her encouragement.

It is surely important to choose a topic that you are interested in. However, it is also very important to get the support and guidance that you need along the way. For me, it was the Japanese language teacher and my supervisor who helped me to build my confidence and your career as a researcher.
