Dear Community Members,
I am delighted to announce that we will renovate our main soccer pitch and running track. This project has been under development for the past couple of years and is a part of our long-term facilities planning under Strand 3 of our Schoolwide Action Plan.
At the moment, our current large pitch serves us well, particularly in dry weather conditions. We see that with rain and a small amount of use, the pitch requires a prolonged period to recover from being ripped up. This can be attributed to several factors, including type of grass, soil, and uneven drainage. The existing running track is different from an international standard for distance; thus, holding track and field athletics competitions is a challenge. Over time, both the pitch and track have become uneven, with high and low spots increasing the risk of injury to the athletes.
The new design will address many of the challenges and limitations of our current facilities, making the surfaces of both the running track and the soccer pitch safer, more durable, and easier to maintain. The distance of the running track will be an international standard 400 meters on the inside lane, have four running lanes, in addition to a 100 m sprint straight away and will be constructed of a non-grass material. The non-grass surface provides a physical barrier between the specialized grass of the soccer pitch and the natural grass growing around the outside of the running track. The soccer pitch inside the track will increase in size to 105 m x 60 m and be of a species of turf grass approved by FIFA, with a pop-up irrigation and pump system and appropriate levelling to afford a hazard-free playing surface while affording proper irrigation and drainage.
The project is anticipated to launch near Term 4 of the current school year, with the construction and needed recovery time affording a September ready date. Our Global Insights and Kontak newsletters will share updates and progress with our community.
