Welcome to the Year 2 page. Starting 8 January 2024, we have been learning about plants. Our transdisciplinary theme is “Sharing the Planet''. We will learn about plants for 7 weeks. We have invited the school gardeners several times to teach us how to plant and how to take care of plants. We have also learned about plant parts. Now we know parts of the plant have their own roles. Fruits enclose and protect seeds and aid in seed dispersal. Flowers are the reproductive organs of flowering plants. A leaf is a part of the plant that produces food. Stems provide support and carry nutrients up and down to the plant where they are needed. A root is the part of a plant which usually grows downwards into the soil. Roots anchor plants and absorb water and nutrients.
Furthermore, we love planting! We planted spinach and water spinach in pots. We take care of them by watering them every day. In addition, we record how they grow in our journal every day. We cannot wait to harvest the vegetables soon.
As part of our learning, Year 2 students have done some simple experiments. We always love experiments. We can prove our hypothesis. One of them is the stem experiment. As little scientists, we follow the scientific method to do the stem experiment. Now we have proved that the function of the stem is to transport water and nutrients up from the roots all the way to the leaves.
Here are the steps:
First of all, we prepare some plants such as white chrysanthemums, white roses, and celery.
Next, we prepare 3 plastic cups and pour some water inside.
After that, we add a few drops of red food coloring into the cups.
Then we put the chrysanthemums in cup 1, the rose in cup 2, and the celery in cup 3.
Finally we observe how it changes over 2 days.
After 2 days, we observed that all of the chrysanthemum and rose petals turned red. Furthermore, the celery leaves and stems also have red all around. We love to see how it changes. Now we can see how the stem works visually.
