The students in Yr11 Economics Class are making efforts to create anti-smoking campaigns of their own to make a difference within the school community.
The students are learning about “Market Failure” and how the overconsumption of “demerit goods” (goods that are deemed disadvantageous to consume) will inevitably produce negative long lasting effects for society. Thus, students, under the supervision of their Economics teacher Ibu Shweta have decided to make a multitude of products to raise campaign against smoking. Such products include flyers, posters, stickers, and even TikTok videos to reach different a wide range of audiences.
With this project, students are encouraged to utilize what they have learned in class and create differences in the world. Thus, students learn the importance of concepts learned in Economics and how they can impact the everyday lives of many kinds of people. Raising awareness in regards to the negative impacts of smoking not only on the smoker but to other stakeholders such as the government and society as a whole. In doing so, younger students are also able to learn from their older peers in regards to why they should avoid smoking in the future. This project also acts as a CAS project for the students in Economics class as they are using their knowledge to help advocate and speak against an issue that will continue to negatively affect society.
Overall the entire experience serves as a great opportunity for these students to show what they have learned and how they can utilize such knowledge to make differences in the real world.
