On Friday & Saturday, February 28 & 29, 2020 there were 13 GJS students who participated in the SKYMUN 2020. The SKYMUN 2020 conference is a two-day student-led simulation of the United Nations hosted by Labschool, Kebayoran, South Jakarta. SKYMUN is a conference that focuses on providing the unique MUN experience to novice MUN delegates, such as High School freshmen and Middle School students. It is also geared toward giving High School underclassmen a chance to chair in a MUN conference and provides veteran members with an opportunity to help and educate the young delegates.
GJS students were allocated into three committees: Historical Committee (HC), World Trade Organization (WTO) and World Science and Technology Council (WSTC). The HC explored and discussed the possibilities of Indonesia’s future after the September 30, 1965, attempted coup that end Soekarno’s era and started the New Era under Soeharto. In WTO, they worked hard to find a solution to a conflict between the world’s two largest economies: the United States of Americ and China, which has hurt businesses and weighed upon the global economy. In WSTC, the heated debate happened between countries who support the use of industrial robots in accordance with the development of artificial intelligent (AI) and internet of things (IoT) and those who feared that machine will take over human work.
Overall, our student did very well. Some received special mention in their respective committees as active contributing members of the committees and one, in particular, received an award for the Best Position paper. This has been an excellent opportunity for them to implement the learning profile attributes that they have been learning in class to a real-world problem.
