Year 6 held an Art Exhibition as the focus activity for the PYP Exhibition unit, under the transdisciplinary theme of How We Express Ourselves. The purpose of the Art Exhibition was to raise awareness about our chosen issue. Our chosen issue was chosen during the UOI 2, which was How the World Works.
This Year 6 PYP Exhibition involves many different steps in the process. We went on a study tour to West Nusa Tenggara in order for us to get ideas for our issue. During the West Nusa Tenggara Study Tour, we collected issues that we could use for the exhibition. When we came back from West Nusa Tenggara Study Tour, we decided which issues we will focus on throughout the exhibition process. After we decided on the issues we would like to focus on, we worked on creating metaphors that we would use for the Art Exhibition. Some people needed a longer time than others when working on metaphors. We also made our own central ideas and lines of inquiry while making the metaphor/artwork planning. For the next few weeks, the whole Year 6 was focusing on finishing our artwork and presentations.
Before the actual Exhibition days, Year 6 had a trial exhibition so we could identify what we had to work and improve on, so the actual Exhibition Days could run flawlessly. It turns out that in fact, the actual Exhibition Days were not really nerve-wracking. The only thing that was nerve-wracking from the whole thing was the opening ceremony. This is where we performed innovative music and dance routines based on different cultures of Indonesia. It was the first impression that visitors would get from our school and it had to be good, right?
Explaining our issues and all the research that we did wasn’t that stressful for most of us because we already experienced it during the trial exhibition. After 2 full days, the Art Exhibition days finally finished. Some of the artwork we made for the exhibition are going to be displayed at the upcoming Art Festival.
The next stages of our PYP Exhibition include creating innovative solutions to our issues and putting them into action. This will take place over the next two units: ‘Where We are in Place and Time’ and ‘How we Organise Ourselves’.
