As the culmination activity for our Sharing the Planet unit, the Year 1 students held their own Mini Zoo Exhibit entitled ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them’. The students created their own amazing beasts using the Switchzoo application and then applied their understanding of classification and life cycles by creating a class, diet, reproduction system and life cycle for their animal. They also demonstrated their understanding of animal needs by explaining what their beast needed in their habitat to survive and explained to the many visitors how human actions could have a positive or negative effect on their animals.

As a provocation to our new unit ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’, the Year 1 students were given a country at random. They were asked to pack a bag/small suitcase with 5 – 10 items that they would take with them on a trip there. With help from their parents, they researched the weather in their given country in February and what kind of places they could visit/activities they could do there before deciding on what items to pack. They then presented their items to the class.

As a provocation to our new unit ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’, the Year 1 students listened to presentations from some very special guest speakers – their parents. The parents came and talked about a place, city or country they had visited and what activities they did whilst they were there. The students were very excited and listened enthusiastically to the different presentations, they then recorded their findings in their Parent Travel Fair Passports.
It was a great way to start our inquiry into places.
