There were 4 different area's to concentrate on for this video brief: Identity, Work, Process and Discovery. We were tasked with creating 4 separate storyboards on these specific area's relating to our own way of working.
I first noted down the first things that I thought that related to each area for me personally. I was struggling with a few, or more like feeling that I had so much to include in the 'process' and 'discovery' and not as much in the 'work' part.
I began with 'Process' as my process takes the longest and has the most steps in. I split it into 4 sections 'Making', 'Tidying & Drying', 'Bisque Firing' and 'Glazing'. I first was sketching it out in my sketchbook first so I could get a better understanding of what steps needed to be included and what didn't. By the time I came to the 'glazing' step I gave up in my sketchbook as it was going on for too long! It was hard to storyboard this part as so much of it would be only 1/3 second shots but I still had to include them otherwise the storyboard wouldn't make sense. I was also incorporating a lot of time lapse and slow motion shots mixed together for this section so hopefully in the actual video it won't seem as long as the storyboard is making it out to be.
Discovery was the most exciting storyboard for me to create personally because it's where the most fascinating things happen in my work (I chose to do the firing process as my discovery). It was fun to map out ideas on how to capture the kiln and the process of loading/unloading, and to have thoughts on how to capture the actual transformation that goes on in there. There's so much unknown when opening a fired kiln, you can never tell if something is going to come out like you think until you open it. It's the mystery and the excitement that comes with this stage that I want to capture in my video.
I had 2 ideas when it came to thinking about my identity.
The first was to think about what inspires my work and what in my surrounding environment influend=ces what I make. I had the idea of picking pieces I have already made and comparing them to items in my house that relate my my culture and heritage.
The second idea was to concentrate more on the space I work in. While my shed studio isn't ready yet, I still go in there to get clay and then I transform my kitchen table into my studio for a couple hours so I can create some work.
Then as I was thinking about what to include in my work storyboard I thought either idea could also fit in there as the only other idea I had was to show a piece of work I've created from the past to show how my work has evolved.
These are the shortened down version of each of my storyboards
