When we first got to start this project I knew I wanted to create a wall piece. I had enjoyed stepping out of the boundaries of being a studio potter - not that I ever was - but to focus more on what I can create with clay that isn't based around domestic ware and a vessel. This was mostly inspired after my last project where I created the hanging jellyfish, where I realised there is no boundary on what you can make out of clay.
I had a few ideas mulling around on what I wanted to create, and I made quick sketches on them. The first idea was to make a wall piece containing symbols of things that represent me and my cultures. The second one includes the same but with the addition of a woman figure, plus sizes and a woman of colour to represent myself and the inclusivity of people like me. The third was aimed towards the thought of being a woman while surrounding ideas of fertility, breast cancer and all the other struggles a woman might face, which are personal to me.
I was relating to my first idea the most, mainly because I really like making patterns and I wanted to include things about myself without being to literal. Making patterns has always been a theme in my work but this time I was going to be making them 3D and letting the pattern flow as the piece and not the 'decoration'.
