Working at college was always challenging, especially when it came to firing my work so when the opportunity came available for me to buy a second hand kiln (which was only a year old), I couldn't pass up the chance!
Building a block shed had always been on the card for 2020 for my dad and I to share, but when COVID hit the plans got pushed back with all the uncertainty. But once the offer was presented to me for me to buy a kiln in the summer, we put plans into motion as I didn't want to miss the opportunity of taking out one of the biggest stresses for me when creating my work.
After a couple month of back and forth with an annoying builder (thankfully the person I was buying the kiln from was fine to keep it at theirs for me and were nice enough to still let me use it up there!),we found someone else and he got started straight away so here are the daily photos of how my little block shed studio got built.
The before
Day 1 - October 15th
Day 2- supplies arrived
Day 3
Day 4 & 5
Day 6 & 7 last day! October 29th
This build only took about 2 weeks and only 7 days in total (they had to wait for things to dry between days and weather conditions were against them some days).
Rainbow over the shed
First times inside & beginning painting after 2 weeks
I decided to keep it simple and paint the inside white, the whole process was very tedious and took a lot more paint than we expected! But we wanted it painted before we got the electric put in so it would be easier.
It was a very surreal moment getting my kiln home, I couldn't believe that soon I would only have to walk outside to get my work fired and I could do it anytime I wanted. It was a couple days later when the electric got installed and firing for the first time was scary but I'm glad I got to learn how to use it a couple times at my friends house who I bought it from.
The build isn't quite finished yet, the window still needs glass and because it was built in winter it's damp and the walls are still wet so until the spring I won't be adding/finishing anything else in there but it's still usable as I have the kiln installed and that's all that matters.
New updates will be coming in Spring 2021
