After viewing the amazing moon jellyfish in the sea zoo, I began drawing and painting out my ideas on how I was going to create my jellyfish.
The exhibition at the sea zoo
From viewing the jellyfish I began rough sketches which turned into a sketchbook of watercolour painted jellyfish. Having these first hand photos really helped as a reference.
Initial sketches on idea's on how to create hanging jellyfish pieces. I was thinking of making small discs and beads that could chime together when swaying. I wanted to get across movement as jellyfish move in such a unique and beautiful way.
My ideas were centred around the true jellyfish and not the moon jellyfish due to the fact that the moon jellyfish don't have large tentacles. I did research on the 3 main types of jellyfish, true, moon and box jellyfish, to gain a better understanding of the characteristics of each jellyfish. But as I learnt each jellyfish will always be different than each other, neither ones are exactly the same as I saw when visiting them in the sea zoo. So when looking at my project I want to explore the idea of making a collection of hanging ceramic jellyfish that all have their individual characters.
