Grades 9 to 12

Why?

Secondary students will engage in distance learning to:

  • Maintain a sense of belonging;

  • Maintain a sense of routine;

  • Demonstrate the overall expectations in order to earn their credit(s).

Teachers need to provide content, feedback, assessment and evaluation so students can meet the overall expectations.

How?

Action Items

Types of Learning

Use a blend of synchronous and asynchronous delivery. Educators may need to start out with asynchronous learning only for the first 2 weeks and phase in some synchronous learning after that.

  • Asynchronous Learning: Students independently access teacher directed content and complete assignments/tasks.

  • Synchronous Learning: Students and teachers connecting at the same time. Best used for students to connect socially with class, for teachers to teach a key concept, and for students to ask questions.

Types of Tools to Facilitate Learning

Teachers choose the platform that will work best for them and their students.

  • Asynchronous tools for delivery of content: Google Classroom, Showbie, D2L (Virtual Learning Environment we use for our e-learning courses), Edmodo, Website, Email.

  • Synchronous tools for bringing the class together: Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Adobe Connect.

Types of Tools for Creating Resources to Support Student Learning

Examples include using content in D2L, online textbooks, Youtube, Khan Academy, teacher-created videos and/or presentations, KnowledgeHook.

Assessment and Evaluation

Teachers will assign learning tasks, projects and culminating activities that will be marked for purposes of formative and summative evaluation. Teachers will communicate results of these marked assignments to students. Results may be used by teachers to inform students’ final course marks if it results in an increase in the mark. See section on assessment, evaluation and reporting for more details.

Secondary teachers will continue to work with school staff including the SERT, guidance counsellors, student success teachers and attendance counsellors to provide ongoing support for students.

  1. Review curriculum expectations/long range plans and create a plan for student acquisition of the remaining, essential overall expectations.

  2. Choose your asynchronous tool to deliver and house content.

  3. Choose a synchronous tool to bring your class together at the same time.

  4. Consider tools that you will use to create content.

What?

Action Items

  • Students are expected to engage in learning for 3 hours per week for each course.

  • The content will be the remaining, essential overall and specific expectations that are critical for the next level of study or pathway destination.

  • Secondary teachers will continue to work with school staff including the SERT, guidance counsellors, student success teachers and attendance counsellors to provide ongoing support for students.

*** All assigned tasks will have estimated time allotments indicated and the sum of the time allotments will equal the required learning time.

  1. Create assignments/tasks for students.

  2. Post tasks for students

When?

Action Items

Start Date

Monday, April 6th. Start small. Start simple. This is new and will take time.

Note: Secondary students are expected to schedule work at part-time jobs around the scheduled learning time.

Asynchronous Content Posting

Content needs to be posted by 9:00 am Monday of each week.

Synchronous Sessions

Because we have board-wide, enhanced e-learning classes in progress, we need a board-wide schedule to avoid scheduling conflicts. There is no expectation of a synchronous session during the first two weeks; however, educators need to contact each student at least once per week and also respond to student and family questions/requests within 24 hours. The recommended length for a synchronous session is 30 to 60 minutes.

Synchronous Schedule

Period 1: Monday Morning or Wednesday Afternoon

Period 2: Monday Afternoon or Wednesday Morning

Period 3: Tuesday Morning or Thursday Afternoon

Period 4: Tuesday Afternoon or Thursday Morning

Mornings: 9:00 am to 11:30 am

Afternoons: 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm

Each Grade 9-12 class will aim to have one synchronous session per week. Synchronous sessions must be scheduled and communicated one week in advance. The sessions are a support for students and are invitational for students.

  1. Share weekly schedule/ plan by Monday at 9 a.m.

  2. Make contact with each student at least once per week.

  3. Schedule and facilitate one synchronous session per week.
