Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting (K-12)

  • Final report cards will be generated for all elementary students and for all subjects that were scheduled to be reported on during Term 2.

  • Students’ marks cannot be lower than what they were as of March 13, 2020.

  • Teachers will use assessment for learning (formative assessment) to gather evidence of how students are progressing in their learning and provide feedback to their students to support their continuous and ongoing learning.

  • In determining final grades and marks for the final report card, teachers will use the evaluation information gathered between September 3, 2019 and March 13, 2020. When in the best interest of an individual student, a teacher may include evidence of learning demonstrated from April 6th and beyond. Marks will only improve if students demonstrate further achievement of the expectations.

  • Reporting on Learning Skills and Work Habits must reflect information gathered prior to March 13th . Grades for learning skills can only improve from April 6th and beyond.

  • If teachers choose to include comments, the comments must reflect the work completed from September 3, 2019 to March 13, 2020. Teachers may choose to include comments on growth in learning demonstrated during the school closure period when it is to the student’s benefit.

  • The Kindergarten Communication of Learning will be based on teachers’ observations of key learning and growth in learning prior to March 13th . Teachers may choose to include comments on growth in learning demonstrated during the school closure period when it is to the student’s benefit.

Midterm Reporting for Grades 9 to 12

  • Midterm report cards will not be generated for any secondary students.

  • Marks for Civics/Careers and for all graduating students will be entered by April 15th and must be based on work completed up to March 13th.

  • For Civics/Careers and all graduating students’ midterm marks, teachers may provide opportunities for students to submit missed and/or additional assignments to demonstrate their learning. If a student completes additional work that brings up his or her mark, that work can be reflected in the midterm mark. The midterm mark can be adjusted up until April 22nd.

  • Students’ midterm marks cannot be lower than what they were as of March 13, 2020.

  • Teachers can adjust the weighting of assigned tasks in their determination of the mark, if needed and provided the change in weighting does not lower the student’s overall mark as of March 13th.

  • Marks should represent the most accurate reflection of student work, based on what is reasonable and in the best interest of each individual student during this time.

  • Final marks for Term 1 half-credit courses will be emailed to students.

  • From the Ministry: “According to Growing Success (page 60), students can withdraw from a Grade 11 or 12 course no more than five instructional days after the first report card is issued in a semestered school, or more than five instructional days after the second report card is issued in a non-semestered school. For the 2019-20 school year, this date has been changed to May 6, 2020. Schools will make every effort to reach out to students to communicate the deadline for dropping courses. Principals will use their discretion to continue to work in the best interest of each student.”

Final Reporting for Grades 9 to 12

  • Teachers will communicate results of these marked assignments to students.
