The literacy and community volunteer hours graduation requirements have been waived for this year’s potential grads.
We are planning and delivering both. New learning must be facilitated for our students.
DSB1’s Continuity of Learning Google site will have a section dedicated to supporting FSL teachers with distance learning. One example would be to post videos of readings that students can then practice at home.
Educators are required to make contact with every student a minimum of once per week. Additional information will be provided about attendance.
Home instruction can continue as per the number of hours per week that were originally approved. The instruction cannot be face-to-face. It can be done through a digital tool such as Skype, FaceTime, Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Adobe Connect. If technology is not available for both the student and teacher, home instruction can take place via telephone.
Staff are encouraged to be creative and innovative. In consultation with the school principal, a school staff can implement ideas above and beyond what is outlined in the continuity of learning plan.
A communication and implementation plan is in progress. This includes a variety of communication tools- DSB1 and school websites, Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, radio ads, media release and interviews, email, phone call, mailed letters.
We are not counting the instructional days and/or dividing the curriculum into percentages. Educators are expected to review curriculum expectations/long-range plans and create a plan for student acquisition of the remaining, essential overall expectations.
Secondary students must complete their assigned work and demonstrate the remaining, essential overall expectations in order to achieve each secondary school credit.
Educators are encouraged to do what they would normally do in a regular classroom/school setting (i.e., contact home, offer one-on-one assistance, ensure special education and/mental health needs are supported, involve the Student Success Team at the secondary level).
We are waiting for direction from the Ministry.
Secondary teachers are not required to prepare midterm report cards. However, they are required to provide marks for graduating students.
We anticipate that elementary and secondary teachers will be required to prepare final report cards in June.
All staff will need to appreciate that students will return to school with some gaps in learning and will need to make accommodations for these gaps.
