Intermediate students will engage in distance learning to:
Maintain a sense of belonging;
Maintain a sense of routine;
Learn the core subjects through their interests and inquiry.
Teachers need to provide content, feedback and formative assessment so students can stay engaged in learning.
Types of Learning
Use a blend of synchronous and asynchronous delivery. Educators may need to start out with asynchronous learning only for the first 2 weeks and phase in some synchronous learning after that.
Asynchronous Learning: Students independently access teacher directed content and complete assignments/tasks.
Synchronous Learning: Students and teachers connecting at the same time. Best used for students to connect socially with class, for teachers to teach a key concept, and for students to ask questions.
Types of Tools to Facilitate Learning
Teachers choose the platform that will work best for them and their students.
Asynchronous tools for delivery of content: Google Classroom, Showbie, D2L (Virtual Learning Environment we use for our e-learning courses), Edmodo, Website, Email
Synchronous tools for bringing the class together: Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Adobe Connect
Types of Tools for Creating Resources to Support Student Learning
Examples include using content in D2L, online textbooks, Youtube, Khan Academy, teacher-created videos and/or presentations, KnowledgeHook
Assessment and Evaluation
Grade 7 and 8 teachers will use formative assessment approaches to gather evidence of how students are progressing in their learning. It is expected that teachers will provide feedback to their students on their progress.
Review curriculum expectations/long range plans and create a plan for student acquisition of the remaining, essential overall expectations.
Itinerant teachers provide activities to the homeroom teacher by Thursday.
The homeroom teacher shares the plan with students.
Choose your asynchronous tool to deliver and house content.
Choose a synchronous tool to bring your class together at the same time.
Consider tools that you will use to create content.
It is recommended that intermediate students engage in learning for an average of 10 hours per week.
The required subjects are Language, Math, Science and History/Geography.
Additional Subjects: To be provided by itinerant teachers (e.g. Cree, Core French, Music, Physical Education)
*** For the required subjects, all assigned tasks will have estimated time allotments indicated and the sum of the time allotments will equal the required learning time.
Create assignments/tasks for students.
Post tasks for students.
It is recommended that teachers:
provide students and families with a weekly schedule/plan by Monday morning at 9:00 am;
be available to correspond and support students and families throughout the week;
schedule check-ins with students (e.g., virtually, email, calls);
schedule a maximum of one and only one synchronous learning session per week;
schedule and communicate the synchronous learning session one week in advance.
Share weekly schedule/ plan by Monday at 9 a.m.
Make contact with each student at least once per week.
