Dear Families,
Monday, January 19th, is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Each January, our nation celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day in honor of Dr. King’s leadership in the Civil Rights Movement and his commitment to equality, justice, and nonviolence. The holiday was first proposed shortly after Dr. King’s assassination in 1968, but it took many years of advocacy before it became a federal holiday in 1983. The first nationwide observance took place in 1986, and by 2000, all 50 states recognized it. Today, MLK Day is not only a time to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy, but also a national “day of service,” encouraging all of us to work together to improve our communities and continue his vision of fairness and unity.
