As wardrobes shift to accommodate the changing seasons, please remind your student of the dress code. Below is the dress code as outlined in the Student Handbook:
DRESS CODE
Grace Snell Middle School acknowledges that good grooming and personal attire positively affect student achievement and behavior. The guidelines for student dress code are to promote a positive learning environment for Grace Snell students. GSMS administration and staff would like the cooperation of the students and parents in reviewing the student’s dress to ensure it meets the following dress code guidelines before the student comes to school.
1. Shoes and shirts must be worn at all times. (No flip-flops or slide sandals due to safety concerns.)
2. Skirts, pants, and shorts must be fastened and worn above the hip bone, fitting at the inseam and at the waistline. No exposed undergarments are allowed.
3. No cleavage or midriff shall be visible.
4. No spaghetti straps/strapless shirts shall be worn.
5. Leggings and yoga pants can be worn with a shirt that is the length of mid-thigh.
6. No sleepwear shall be worn, including, but not limited to bedroom slippers, pajamas, robes, bonnets, or blankets.
7. All shorts and skirt lengths will be mid-thigh. The highest point of any slit in a dress, skirt, or shorts must be mid-thigh. This rule applies to shorts, skirts, and dresses, even when worn with any type of tights or leggings.
8. Student pants/shorts: No holes, slits, rips, or tears that show skin above the mid-thigh.
9. No headgear shall be worn in the building. This includes hats, ball caps, bonnets, sunglasses, bandanas, scarves, handkerchiefs, or hoodies. *Exceptions for religious or medical reasons to be granted by the principal.
10. No item of clothing or jewelry shall contain any language, graphics, symbols, or slogans that depicts, promotes, or advertises gang affiliation (as identified by the Gwinnett County Police Gang Task Force), illegal activity, illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sexual references, violence, offensive language, or offensive designs whether expressed explicitly or implied.
Gang related attire includes, but is not limited to the following: Long bulky chains and necklaces; gang style belt buckles (belt buckles which have Old English script letters and symbols); large oversized pendants on necklaces and chains; bandanas altering clothing from its original form to change the names and/or intended marking on the clothing; sweat bands, head bands, and/or wrist bands; draping articles of clothing, towels, or objects out of pants pockets or over the shoulder or neck area; wearing clothes in an asymmetrical manner such as rolling up one pant leg, draping one side of overalls, or a belt hanging down one side; and applying bandages to the face when no injury is present.
11. Jewelry or accessories that may be used as weapons are not to be worn at school. This includes, but not limited to, wallet, chains, jewelry such as spiked rings, spiked bracelets, spiked earrings, two or three finger rings that are joined, and bulky chains worn around the neck or waist. Sharp objects that could pose a danger, such as spikes or safety pins, are not allowed on clothing or book bags.
12. Any student’s dress/appearance not specifically stated, which the faculty or staff deems distracting, will not be permitted. It is essential that students respect the learning environment by being appropriately dressed for school. The purpose of the student dress code is not to inhibit any person’s taste in attire, but rather to better facilitate the process of education through reasonable guidelines of “dress”. The Principal or her designees, for specific reasons, may make exceptions to the Grace Snell Dress Code.
If a student comes to school in clothing that violates the dress code, an attempt should be made to correct the situation including but not limited to asking the student if they have a change of clothing, having the student contact a parent to bring a change of clothing, turning the clothing inside out, having the student change into GSMS clothing if available, or reminding the student of the expectations. Students may be asked to wait in the In-School Suspension classroom until the violation is resolved if instruction cannot continue due to the severity of the dress. Teachers will follow the GSMS Response to Behavior process to issue consequences for dress code violations. Repeated or egregious violations will result in administrative consequences.
