What is MAP? (Measure of Academic Progress)
MAP Growth is a computer adaptive test
Adaptive - individual instructional level and difficulty of questions changes based on how a student answers
MAP growth tests begin with a question appropriate for the student's grade level then dynamically adapts throughout the test in response to student performance
This progressive refinement allows MAP Growth meet students where they are - challenging top performers without overwhelming students whose skills are below grade level
Measures what a student knows and what they are ready to learn next.
Assesses instructional level - not mastery of standard
Measures individual student needs and tracks student growth over time
Nationally normed test
Millions of reference points to evaluate student growth
Performance is measured as a RIT score - changes in the RIT score indicate student growth
RIT score is correlated with state tests in math and reading which creates a projection for how well a student will perform on the state assessment
Enables teachers to target curriculum to specific needs
Aligned to TEKS
Students New to Forney ISD
FISD uses Clever (synced from Skyward nightly) to roster students in NWEA/MAP and in order to do this, a student must have a TSDS ID#. New students will not be available immediately and SHOULD NOT BE ADDED MANUALLY.
MAP testing can be used for students who were home-schooled and plan to enroll in the district. Results can help determine grade placement for the student. They do not have to be enrolled to use this screener. Please wait for the student to be available in NWEA/MAP
Students can be screened outside of the district MAP window once they have been rostered in NWEA/MAP. These students will not have a MAP growth score (or areas of strength and growth needed) in the system (although you CAN calculate a growth score) the next window and are not included in district data for the MAP window. Important to print or record test results for these students. Test event results are not available until the following day.
As a general rule, students should be tested according to the content they are being taught in the classroom. Even though K-2 and 2-5 tests are on the same scale, the content assessed is different. If students are receiving instruction on second grade content, they should be administered 2-5 assessments. NWEA recommends considering the following when deciding whether to transition a student from K-2 to 2-5:
Can the student read independently? K-2 includes audio support, while 2-5 does not.
Has the student been exposed to 2nd grade content? While this is not a major concern for reading, students who haven't been exposed to 2nd grade content generally shouldn't take the math 2-5 test.
Has the student already tested this academic year? We do not recommend that students switch tests mid-year. This is a change from our prior recommendations.
Does the student have any special considerations? Students with IEPs, 504s, or other needs such as ELL may have circumstances that are best served by taking a different assessment than their peers.
Is the student scoring above 190 in K-2 reading, or 200 in K-2 math, or below 150 in either 2-5 math or reading? If so, consider switching the student to the higher or lower test.
For detailed recommendations on transitioning students between tests, see MAP Growth Transition Guidance on NWEA.org.
Per the FISD Special Education Department:
Text-to-Speech is the ONLY accommodation that Special Education/Section 504 students can receive when administering MAP screening.
Summative tests support the following universal accessibility features, available to all students who qualify:
Highlighter and eraser — Useful for marking key parts of a question (not available on iPads)
Calculator — Appears for applicable questions
Keyboard Navigation — Useful for students unable to use a mouse; see Keyboard Navigation for Testing
Using Text-to-Speech - should NOT be assigned per FISD SPED department (see above)
