Modern History

COURSE CONTENT

Theory

This course provides students with an understanding of the making of the modern world and Australia from 1918-present. The 20th century became a critical period in Australia’s social, cultural, economic and political development, shaping the nation and its place in the world.

Students explore the events and policies of the period after World War One; the emergence of conflict; the causes and events of World War Two and the impact this had on Australia. Students also investigate the challenge and change that occurred to social structures and attitudes in the latter half of the twentieth century, focusing on the African-American civil rights movement in the US, and the struggle of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders for rights and freedoms in Australia. Finally, students analyse the causes and conditions that led to increased migration to Australia after World War Two, commenting on the role of the Vietnam War in changing government policy and public opinion.
