‘Home and Away'

For my HSC body of work, I have illustrated the famous city skylines of Sydney and Dubai along two sheets of drawing paper (approx. 27 x 100 cm). To do this, I employed a range of graphite shading pencils as well as a blending stump and eraser for further refinement. To improve visual accuracy and realism I made use of lightboard as to correctly depict the scale of both skylines. To create my initial reference photo, I selected two photos of the respective skylines, flipped ‘Dubai’ and placed it parallel to ‘Sydney’ as to infer that it is a reflection via photoshop.
The significance of these two places lie in my past and my journey to get to where I am today. I was born in the UAE, in the city of Dubai and resided there for the majority of my life. Coming to Australia was a giant leap of faith. I didn’t know what would lie at the end of the journey, be it good or bad, whether I would love it or hate it. I was met with a vast change in culture, people, and lifestyle. Thus, with my work Home and Away aimed to capture the beauty that seen when comparing vastly different places, in the hope that it might resonate with those who have experienced similar journeys given the cultural diversity in Australia.
