‘The Urban Condition’

The production of my work began with identifying how I wanted to present my photographs and the overall concept I was seeking to develop. Through countless trial and test shots, I was able to come up with producing solely black and white photographs of isolated subjects in urban environments. The use of Lightroom and Photoshop assisted with the development of the photographs allowing me to add creative features to each photo to help convey my idea. The idea for my work began with the influence of my love for black and white images, I then did trial photographs in many different environments and found the Urban environment best suited the black and white inner-city look I was going for.
The work explores the ornate characteristics of the urban environment as well as the individuals who surround themselves with it. Each photograph consists of isolated individuals in contrasting urban domains. Through the use of creative techniques such as unique angles, movement, blur and reflections it highlights this notion of isolated and moving subjects through this concrete jungle. My title “The Urban Condition” evokes this isolated journey through the urban. The use of black and white in my images develops this dramatic and isolated allowing the audience to better understand the conceptual meaning.
