‘Head in The Clouds’
Drawing
Graphite and color pencil on paper
3 drawings
For my body of work, I chose to use a combination of graphite and colour pencil for its bold contrast when blended together. My material practice was also heavily influenced by artists ‘Masato Tsuchiya’ and ‘Daniel Segrove’, and I have utilized the aesthetic style and techniques of their works as inspiration within in my own series of drawings. I have chosen to use images I have taken myself as references to capture the specific facial and body expressions that I needed in order to create my own compositions. I also chose to utilize female models as opposed to male models as it better complemented the soft aesthetic of blended pencil. Through presenting 3 different subjects, I wish to convey the universal nature of my concept and its effect on various individuals.
Through my body of work, I’m exploring the detriment of living vicariously through our thoughts and its ability to take us away from experiencing the beauty of life. Additionally, my work serves to communicate to the audience the importance of being able to live within the present moment. In using a monochromatic palette with fading hints of color, I aim to represent the dichotomy between ‘existing’ and ‘living’, illustrating the deteriorating ‘vibrancy’ of our lives when we fail to escape the confinements of our own mind. By keeping the background of each piece empty, it shifts the focal point towards the central figure as to depict the abstracted and disassociated state we enter when we become immersed in our thoughts and neglect our surrounding environment. Emphasized through the cloudy motif of each piece, my title ‘Head in The Clouds’ symbolically encapsulates this concept of being out of touch with what’s happening around us and as a result being unable to appreciate the freedom of being present.
