Earthenware clay, acrylic paint, metal and wood

When starting my work, I began with exploring the way I could utilize ceramics and incorporate some of my past work’s techniques on a larger and more detailed scale. The Idea for my work stemmed from a work displayed at ArtExpress (Inter-impression by Elke Leamon) and my fascination of architecture and ceramics. Through countless experiments, I found that the scenes I liked most, had a common theme of more vibrant colours and European architecture involved. From this I began looking for places that could suit my media and photos from an angle where I could create layers and foregrounds within this. From this stemmed my chosen cities; Prague (Czech Republic), Mostar (Bosnia) and Sorrento (Italy).
Exploring these cities, my work attempts to be realistic whilst modifying certain landscapes to fit my chosen media better. First rolling out a slab of clay and cutting it to the desired size, I then traced my image into the clay and cut the clay across defined layers to create the multi levels that 2 works have. Then within these pieces, I carved and hollowed out bodies of water and windows to give the appearance of a 3-D city. Using different tools and techniques I was able to create differing textures to accentuate waves in water and forests on mountains. I also added clay to the pieces for certain focal-point buildings and bridges, further allowing textures and a 3-D feel. My title, ‘Pursuing Serendipity’, represents the idea of travel and the aesthetics of the world within these vibrant and unique places.
