Within X Without is a work about contrasts, comparing the world inside a human brain with our outside world. It features the two-surrealist works ‘thought process’ and ‘dialogue’. The work was drawn using a combination of pencil, ink, pen, ink wash and black colour pencil. ‘Thought process’ is centered around an eye, symbolic of our perception as well as the third eye as a gateway within and into our own minds. While ‘Dialogue’, features numerous images of objects and creatures that make sounds as well as a river of words in multiple languages, to highlight the variety of ways in which conversations happen outside of our head.
‘Thought process’ explores the complex inner workings of the mind, and the ordered chaos inherent in our train of thought and perception of the world. The brain in the center symbolizes the individual and the various flowers are goals and solutions we might strive toward. There are numerous obstacles to overcome between us and our wishes, from distractions like TV, to poisonous thoughts rearing to bite you at any time as well. On the other hand, ‘Dialogue’ is about the ways in which we interact with our world, with a focus on the fluid auditory aspect of it, to contrast with ‘thought process’s’ symmetry. The interplay of time in the form of clocks and the opposing sun and moon further incorporating the idea of spending time on conversation and its nuances. The works, however, are still open to interpretation from the viewer and the meaning drawn from them are entirely up to the way in which a viewer chooses to interact and comprehend the work.
