‘Camera Focus’
Drawing
Coloured pencils on toned paper
8 drawings
For my body of work, I chose to use prismacolor and derwent coloured pencils on toned paper due to my familiarity with this medium to detail different aspects of the human figure. To achieve a ‘camera-focus’ effect, I blended the edges of each drawing into empty space, hoping to contrast the details with the large blank areas. I used a series of warm toned pencils, ranging from brown shades to deeper red shades, juxtaposed against the cool blue of the clothing on the male and female figures. By integrating 2 large drawings depicting the complete male and female body with 6 smaller drawings of fragmented body parts, I wanted to illustrate the form and movement of the body.
My work is focused on society’s emphasis on our physical appearance rather than our innate nature in a world driven by looks. I intend to display how this contemporary age doesn't place value on our personality and actual character, as these features are perceived to be less important. This is explored through the contrast of the empty space surrounding the detailed body parts, resembling the pure ‘focus’ on our appearances, by disregarding the fundamental characteristics that form our personality.
