For my Body of Work, I have decided to create a series of watercolour and pigment liner pen illustrations of food, more specifically lunchboxes. The artwork will portray different angled views of the lunchbox my mum has packed throughout my years in school despite being busy with work all the time. I have picked to use watercolour due to its soft colour portrayal and being able to control and play around with the different shades and effects with the paint. From dancing, vibrating light-filled passages to richly coloured transparent darks, from cascading wet washes to staccato dry brush effects, watercolours can produce painting effects which no other medium can match.
The message, behind my Body of Work, will be the appreciation and thankfulness towards my mother's dedication and commitment to raising me and my 3 younger siblings. Despite running her own business, dealing with customers daily, doing the house chores and many more, my mum continues to wake up every morning at 5 am on dot to pack us warm, fresh and delicious lunches for us 4 kids almost every school day of the week. From Traditional Korean lunches to Japanese, Italian, Thai cuisine; she never fails to surprise us every lunch break when we peek inside. Waking up to see the lunch box on the kitchen counter, slowly lifting the lid to release what food is inside today, it is like a Kinder Surprise experience for me and my siblings. I seek to return at least a small fraction of my gratitude and thankfulness for having her as my mother and hope to become like her one day in the future.
