This is all about our first day at Gilmerton Walled Garden. Enjoy.
It felt different from every Thursday before, as we slowly trekked along the peaceful path. When we arrived we absorbed all there was to see across the orchards and the flower beds and the small maze winding through the tall flowing grass as it gently bent with the wind. The work was so fun we ran around mapping all of it. We tried to draw a good 'to scale' map of the gardens including all the different areas with a key. It was hard to get all the sizes right. After a long morning we came back to a great break.
We met Di and Charlie, who showed us around the garden, and showed us the directions - North, South, East and West so we could orientate ourselves in the garden. She told us to stay away from the beehives and the well!
When we got back to class, we checked on the seeds we'd planted the week before. They were starting to sprout and would soon be ready to be transferred to the garden - peas, runner beans, and lettuce (which did NOT work!)
Back at school we were inspired to try to draw realistic close up detailed line drawings of flowers, including all the important parts of the flowers.
