Today we learned how to do tie dying on fabric. Di helped us tie the string around our squares of fabric, then use coloured dye. We had to mash it down with a spoon, then leave it overnight. The next day, our squares looked great! We can use dyes from the natural environment too so we might explore that more later in our Textiles project.
After we made our squares, we cut out stencil shapes inspired by Gilmerton Garden - shapes of leaves, or Saltires to show our School flag, so we can screen print on to the squares. Today we just learned how to do do a basic screen print but we'll all get a shot next week. This helped us get ready for making our bags next week! We're quite excited about that because we are going to sell them to the community at our Christmas market and make some money for our class.
This week on Friday we also went to the Rights Respecting Schools event at Ross high School. Here, we showed everyone all the great work we've been doing with the garden and our community and had a good chat about what we are going to do next. This project is going to help us get our Gold Rights Respecting School award! We are hoping to keep working with Di and the Garden, as well as other helpers from the community, to feed people soup in the village hall after Christmas.
