Common Sense Educator
What I Did ✅:
I use the lessons available through Common Sense education in my kindergarten classroom monthly. They also receive the same lessons in library once a week. The videos are very kid-friendly and developmentally appropriate and I remain transparent by sharing them with the families as well. Teaching digital citizenship equips students with the knowledge, skills, and resources to succeed as lifetime learners. This also helps them learn to engage within a digital environment with responsibility and confidence to develop as leaders who will leave meaningful impacts in the lives of others.
What I Learned 🧠:
They are never too young! I have learned that many of the lessons out there that are designed for young learners touch on a variety of key topics like sources of information, cyberbullying prevention, online safety, digital responsibility, and health and wellness which are all very relevant in K-2. While they may just be beginning to understand citing a valid digital source and not plagiarizing, "stealing" is an age-old moral and value. As with all other teaching themes, digital citizenship must be taught with intent on an ongoing and consistent basis to be done so successfully.
How I Will Grow 🌱:
I am actively seeking new teaching materials and ways to cover digital citizen topics in the classroom and use them cross curricular. I will continue to find parent information about this topic and develop training to help parents monitor their children's digital health. I have learned from my own children and I want to continue to be the best role model for them when it comes to online safety and digital health and well-being.
Students need to be educated on how to be good citizens of their country and what their rights and responsibilities are as members of society. The same issues need to be addressed with regard to the emerging digital society, so that students can learn how to be responsible and productive members of that society. — Mike Ribble
