Internship Journal & Goals Achieved
What I Did ✅:
During my internship, I was able to establish goals with my mentor that helped improve my coaching and teaching practice and served as a valuable addition to my school district and my professional and personal growth. One of the goals was to become a Seesaw Ambassador. Continuing my growth, knowledge, and abilities in a program that we utilize heavily proved very useful. I completed the online learning modules and achieved my certification which then helped with my next goal of creating a library of Seesaw Activities for Culture & Diversity. I was able to design and create a library of over 20 activities that are useful to K-3 and easily assigned to students, saving teachers lots of time! I also worked with my grade leader to create a Shared Reading Response workbook for our Fountas and Pinnell curriculum. This workbook is now a valuable resource that all kindergarten teachers in the East Penn School District have access to.
What I Learned 🧠:
There are always valuable skills learned through internships that you wouldn't ordinarily have. The insight I gained with this real-life experience is invaluable for my growth and career. I have gained an appreciation for goal setting, collaborative efforts, multi-tasking, and prioritizing. While I have been in the teaching field for over 15 years now, continuing my education and working towards my masters has given me an awakened sense of desire to learn new skills such as Instructional Technology. This internship allowed me to hone in on my 'asking for help' with my mentor and professor and to problem solve getting in the hours over the summer and working the chain of command for approval for parts of the project. With learning new skills on Seesaw I had some trial and error with selecting and creating appropriate cultural and diversity activities and some needed review and approval before getting posted to our district library. I can better appreciate what I may feel is developmentally appropriate may not be fundamentally appropriate on a larger district level.
How I Will Grow 🌱:
By completing this internship, I have grown and expanded my professional network within the school district and will continue to grow my interpersonal skills with the entire technology department at East Penn School District. I will continue to prioritize goals and manage my time to achieve best results when working on future projects and teams. I have gained the confidence to someday take on the roll of mentor for future student teachers and I am looking forward to utilizing the skills gained during this process.
