A picture is worth a thousand words
Throughout my fifteen years teaching young children, I have developed a philosophy of teaching much like many teachers have. It is a mental checklist, a heartfelt wishlist, and a passion for how I teach the content necessary to engage young children and their families to become lifelong learners. My philosophy has roots in Waldorf, Montessori and Reggio Emilia Approach, it has the branches of play-based, hands-on, and project approach, and the leaves of continuing learning with cutting edge technology, inclusion, and equity that reach to the sky.
Learning Environment
I believe well-designed learning environments support growth across all abilities and developmental domains and standards. My classroom design supports independence and feelings of confidence. It is responsive and nurturing. It facilitates appropriate social interactions and most importantly it is safe and nurturing.
I support and implement effective Universal Design for Learning (UDL) by making materials appropriate and accessible to everyone. This includes furnishings and floor coverings, selection and placement of materials, designs, and displays, as well as lighting and sound.
I believe in an inclusive environment where families feel welcomed with personal photos and message boards. Children with disabilities have full access and participation throughout the room with any materials and design necessary for their success.
I create a print-rich environment that includes labels and books which support the importance of speaking, reading, and writing. It is essential that I also include the diversity and cultural values of my students and families.
My Role as Teacher
I believe that respectful, caring bonds with children and their families are the vital foundation for a wonderful early childhood experience for a student. Parents are the child’s most important teachers. I believe that families are the most important aspect for the student because they are their child's first teacher. I am an active listener in the parent and child’s everyday learning environment. I believe that children can learn through play, interacting with others, their experiences, and hands-on learning activities. I strive to have upmost respect and love for all the children I teach.
Inclusion & Diversity
My goal is to teach children that actively addressing inequity and taking action against injustice are the most profound ways to make meaningful differences in our communities. I believe in developing positive social identities, healthy self-esteem, and respecting all cultures and values is a crucial part of the curriculum. I encourage students and families to understand how equality (sameness) and equity (fairness) are related but different and apply learned tools and skills to recognize biases and dismantle injustices through activism in our community, cultures, and systems.
