Kahoot!: Digital Assessment
What I Did ✅:
For this artifact, I chose a digital tool called Kahoot! and demonstrated how it can be utilized by teachers to provide feedback and support for personalized feedback. The best part is that the program was designed and exists in a very user-friendly platform already which saves teachers a lot of time and effort. I created an assessment that I can use with my current class at the end of our science unit on Trees. Many times curriculums that are used may or may not offer appropriate assessments for grading that are specific to the differenciated learning abilities of all students. Using Kahoot I was able to gain the data necessary to grade appropriately and reflect of where students may still need support and growth on a specific topic.
What I Learned 🧠:
Don't Reinvent the Wheel- Kahoot is a wonderful platform that I have found my classes over the years enjoy imensley while it gives me the assessment data reports that I need to improve my teaching practices. While I did not design the actual Kahoot platform, it is a tool that many teachers can use to differentiate and design tailored assessments specific to their teaching goals. It is easy! It works seamlessly with 1:1 ipads with young children.
How I Will Grow 🌱:
One thing I learned with Kahoot while using it with non-readers is that it is not as independent as I would like and could serve as a disadvantage to children with Individual Education Plans that require extra time. When you complete a live whole group Kahoot and each child logs in, I found that I would then have to read each question and the multiple-choice options while being very cautious to not give the answer away in my tone. As the creator of the Kahoot, you can adjust the time students have for their responses but it can tricky when working with a whole group of eager young children. I will continue to look for ways to include voice to text options and make digital assessments that can be done independently with non-readers yet measure their knowledge of the content without interfering with their reading level ability.
"The use of online assessment tools is giving teachers a more fine-grained understanding of individual students' skills, and assisting them to determine the necessary next steps to enable them to achieve their own learning goals. We are seeing more effective differentiation in classrooms as a result." Susan Mann
