Course Proposal Powerpoint/Syllabus
What I Did ✅:
This artifact is from the course LLT535 Distance Education in K-12 and was created as an example of applying effective strategies for online course design. Having taken this course pre-pandemic was in hindsight an enormous help. I designed a proposal for the course, a syllabus, activities and expectations which later helped me when realizing what many parents were facing with online learning. The course takes parents through an 8 week course that introduces parents and students to many of the apps they will be using and how to set up an at-home reading space. It also assists parents in tracking reading data. For first time parents in a school setting, I felt this course would be very beneficial because in my experience many parents are very overwhelmed with the process.
What I Learned 🧠:
In designing this course from start to finish, it allowed me to view and learn from the process from a different perspective than I have been used to, having been a classroom teacher for many years. I have always held a strong value in the role of parents as their child's first teacher. This course gave me an opportunity to design something FOR parents but with children's needs in mind. The textbook, Essentials of Online Course Design, Second Edition by Majorie Vai and Kristen Sosulski, helped me to construct a strong foundation of distance education theory, terminology, research, and practice, as it relates to classroom activities in the K-12 setting. I was also able to pilot test the design with a fellow classmate as well as get some feedback from a few parents in my classroom.
How I Will Grow 🌱:
Understanding online learning strategies and how to keep young students engaged is an area that I will continue to grow in. This course has already helped me both pre-pandemic and throughout in that the standards and requirements for at home learning have evolved immensely. I will continue to communicate with colleagues what I have learned and hopefully be able to support them in creating at home learning experiences that will engage younger learners and also support families. I also hope to implement some of these ideas and techniques with new technology options and applications.
