Kyle is a 1998 graduate of Delphi and the son of Kim and Teresa Groninger. He has two younger siblings, sister Kandy and brother Kole. He was coached by Steve Moser.

Kyle was selected to the 1998 Football North-South All-star game as a quarterback. As a three sport athlete, Kyle was also a very accomplished basketball and baseball player for the Oracles. He joined the 1,000 point club recording 1,288 points in his career and was the leading scorer in the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons.

After high school he went on to play basketball at DePauw before transferring and completing his degree at Purdue University.
